Number porting: How number porting works by DSL Telecom.

Everything you need to know about number porting and the number-porting procedure explained

This article is for clients who would like to port their number.

Just because you’re switching providers doesn’t mean you can’t take your phone number with you. Number porting is a service offered by all mobile and VoIP service providers in South Africa, which allows you to port geographic numbers from one network to another without having to change your number.

How Number Porting Works:

Step 1: The first step will be to request a number port from your new provider.

Step 2: The next step will differ depending on whether you have a prepaid agreement or are changing to another contract. If you are porting as a prepaid subscriber, it's a very simple and straightforward process. All you need is to do is have the original network that you are moving from authorise your port and this can easily be done by calling the service provider or emailing a request to port your number.

Step 3: Contract ports are more complicated and involve a bit of paperwork. You will have to supply authentication details (specifically your ID number and existing account number). This information will be sent to your existing operator by your new network service provider to verify your details and the current state of your cell phone contract. Having an account with your current operator that is found to be in arrears could result in your number porting request being declined.

Step 4: Once the relevant information is approved, your port activation will be processed and the new network service provider will activate your number on their billing system and update the call routing.

Step 5: Porting your number can take 7-21 working days.
