How to self-install your Telkom fibre router

This article is for new Telkom fibre clients who have just received their Telkom FTTH router and need to install their fibre router and setup their username and password.

For Telkom FTTH orders, the fibre router will be delivered to the delivery address specified on the application form. Once you have received your router you can follow the below steps to easily setup and self-install your router:

What you need to know before installing your fibre router:

  1. If there is no existing ONT installed at your home: A technician would be required to come out and complete your fibre installation.
  2. If there is an ONT installed in your home: A fibre technician will not need to come to your house as you already have the ONT installed, your fibre line will automatically be activated.
  3. Your username and password details: You will receive an SMS with your Telkom username and password. This information should be stored where it can be found again for later use if necessary. If you did not receive an SMS then you can SMS the word 'password' to 012 321 0215 to retrieve your Telkom PPPoE password, this has to be sent from the mobile number associated with the Telkom account.

Once you receive your router, follow the below steps to setup and configure your router settings:

Step 1: Unbox your package and attach the two black antennas to your router. Insert each antenna into the designated inputs on the router's sides and screw them in to secure firmly.

Your hardware setup is now complete. Next, let's configure your internet settings:

Configuring your internet settings - The software setup:

The software setup refers to the essential steps you need to take to configure your router and network settings. These configurations are crucial for activating and ensuring the smooth functioning of your internet connection. The nature of this setup may differ based on the specific protocol employed by your router, which can be one of two types: DHCP or PPPoE. The setup wizard will automatically detect and adapt to the protocol in use, simplifying the process for you.

Step 1: Start your connected computer, open your web browser, and type "10.0.0.2" into the address bar, then press enter to access your router's network.

For PPPoE (Requires a username and password):

Point-to-point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) was designed for managing how data is transmitted over Ethernet networks (cable networks), and it allows a single server connection to be divided between multiple clients, using Ethernet. As a result, multiple clients can connect to the same server from the Internet Service Provider and get access to the internet, at the same time, in parallel. PPPoE accounts require a username and password to be supplied, these details will have been provided along with your router by Telkom. The steps below will explain how to setup the internet settings for your router.

Step 1: When the message "Auto-detect success. PPP account test passed message appears, ensure PPPoE is selected from the dropdown and then click next.
